WESLACO – In an emotional and patriotic Veteran’s Day celebration, eight residents of Valley Grande Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center (VGM) were honored for their military service.
These veterans included Alfredo Castanela (USMC), John Hys (USAF), Jose Mejia (Army), Kenneth Peterson (Navy), Pablo Leal (USMC), Servando Villa (USMC), Vance Ferguson (Army), and Louis Loucks (Army).
“We can never forget the sacrfices made by those who have served and those who are serving today,” said Bill Lowe, administrator. “Veteran’s Day gives us a reason to recognize those who have served in our military, providing us with the freedoms we enjoy today. While this holiday is once a year, we should thank those associated with the military every day.”
The event was highlighted in a ceremony by veterans from the Sergeant Benito Alaniz V.F.W. Post 7473 in Elsa, Tx. Members of the organization stood at attention and saluted the veterans currently living at Valley Grande Manor. Also in attendance were families, friends and staff.
“This was an emotional ceremony,” added Lowe. “Family members and friends became more aware of the sacrifices made by their loved ones. Several speakers showed their gratitude for the service of our residents and the members of the Last Patrol.”
The veteran residents of Valley Grande Manor served the country in conflicts in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
“We were privileged to witness history through the eyes of these veterans,” said Nora Ramirez, Director of Activities at VGM. “By listening to these stories and hearing the accounts of these veterans we were all able to better understand their patriotism and love for our country.”
